Welcome To Middletown Township, New Jersey

The first people to occupy what would one day become Middletown Township were Lenni Lenape native Americans. English explorer Henry Hudson, searching for the mythical Northwest Passage, came to the area in 1609 and landed along Sandy Hook Bay. Middletown Township was established in 1664 after the English conquered New Amsterdam (now New York City). Middletown and most of eastern Monmouth County was ruled by the British until the Battle of Monmouth in the Revolutionary War when the British retreated from Freehold Township, New Jersey down King’s Highway in Middletown to their embarkation points in the bay.

The town began growing rapidly after a railroad junction was constructed in 1875, and it became a fast-growing suburban area at the turn of the 20th century. Today, the population of Middletown Township, Monmouth County, New Jersey, is 66,327 (2000 Census). The town does not have a recognizable town “center” being made up of various smaller named areas within its geographical boundaries.

Middletown’s families were extremely hard hit in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in New York City. Thirty-seven residents, the largest number for any New Jersey municipality, died in the attack. A memorial to the victims stands next to the Middletown Train Station.

Note that Middletown is a great recreation choice because there are four beaches where people can go to have fun, and the best part may be the fact that admission and parking are both free at the beaches and in the parks. Also note that lifeguards are on duty in the summer at Ideal Beach and Leonardo Beach, but that there are no lifeguards at Bayshore Waterfront Park and Port Monmouth beaches.
